The Owling Dog name comes from the Savage’s beloved family pet, Snickers, a Golden Retriever referred to as their ‘big, furry ball of love.’ One night an infrequent visitor – a hoot owl – came to sit in the tree outside the window. The owl was very close and very loud, waking them and drawing them to investigate.
At 3 am Catherine sat outside in the night with Snickers listening to the lovely call of the owl, the dog wagging his tail and whining in reply to it. She pondered the communication between these creatures, as if the owl and dog had some secret, intimate communication – coming as it were in the deepest part of the night. Catherine believes it represents the idea that if we open our hearts and minds in expectation, we may appreciate and accept ‘all good and lovely things’ whenever or however they come to us.
